A handmade handmade gift shop in a small town in Australia is giving its clients a chance to own the most unusual gifts, which is something they haven’t been able to do in the past.
The business, named Craft, was started in a tiny house by two former Australian soldiers in 2015, after a friend had been dying of cancer.
The shop was shut down last year, but the store was reborn in a new location.
The store is run by four men who have worked together for six years, and it is now one of the busiest and most popular gift shops in Australia.
“It’s very simple, we just have a small room, and a few shelves, and then we just go out and do our own thing,” owner Mattie McLeod said.
“We have a lot of different items on our shelves.
We do everything from vintage clothes to vintage artwork to jewellery.”
Mr McLeod’s business, which also offers handmade goods, started with a simple request.
“I’d been in a very rough situation and I thought, ‘why don’t I try to make a business?'”
Mr Mclean said.
He found inspiration when he saw a post on Reddit asking if anyone had a place to make their own handmade gifts.
“That really sparked my creativity,” he said.
The first gift, made of leather, was the first Mr Mclean wanted to sell.
“My friend was dying of leukemia, and he had just just died.
I was trying to make something for him that would be really cool and I made this leather handbag,” he laughed.”
The next one was made of real fabric and I was thinking, ‘this is going to be a little bit of a challenge’,” he said, explaining that his wife had to put it together.”
There’s a couple of people in my business that actually own their own businesses and I’m just a little crazy, so I wanted to start making things myself.”
The business is now expanding into a range of other items including clothing, jewellery and books.
Mr McLean has since started a website where customers can find out more about his business.
“People are really fascinated with the idea of making their own products, and I really think it’s a great thing to do, because you don’t have to sell to an industrial process and then sell to someone else,” he explained.
“You can just make something yourself and you don,t have to pay anyone to do it.”
If you don toil away for hours, then it’s going to cost you less money than selling it to someone.”‘
We’ve just gone through a rough time’The store has grown to about 20 employees, and is now selling items such as handmade shoes, jewelled earrings and a range for children.”
Some of the stuff we’re selling is really pretty and unique,” Mr McLean said.”[People] just want something unique and they don’t want to pay someone to make it.
“He said he didn’t have a specific target for the business, but hoped to open another shop in the future.”
Just like a friend of mine said, we’ve just went through a really rough time, we have a job and we’ve got nothing to show for it,” he joked.”
But we’re really grateful to our community, and we want to try to give back.
